• Similarly, in 1897, during the war between Greece and the Ottoman Empire over the independence of Crete, the Greek Government did not impose any expulsion measures on the Turks settled in Greece, recognizing their right to continue to live in Greece as long as their conduct did not give rise to complaints; however, Turkey did not have the same attitude: in declaring war, it notified the Greek Government, on 18 April 1897, of an irade of the Sultan decreeing expulsion, within 15 days, of all Greeks residing throughout the Ottoman territory.
