With the 1999 Act to Entrench Settlements between Offenders and Victims in Criminal Law (Gesetz zur strafverfahrensrechtlichen Verankerung des Täter-Opfer-Ausgleichs) the public prosecution offices and courts are specifically given the task at each stage of the proceedings of examining a way to reach a settlement between the accused and the victim of a criminal offence (section 155a of the Code of Criminal Procedure [StPO]).
