Studies on post-exposure prophylaxis regimens demonstrate that it is possible to prevent the establishment of infection by suppressing viral replication in the days following exposure — for example, by initiating antiretroviral therapy immediately following a needle-stick injury (Cardo and others, 1997) or by administering post-natal antiretroviral regimens to the newborn (Bultreys and others, 1999).
تبين الدراسات التي أجريت بشأن نظم العلاج الوقائي بعد التعرض للفيروس أن من الممكن الوقاية من استفحال الإصابة عن طريق منع الإصابة ثانية بالفيروس في الأيام التي تلي التعرض للإصابة، بالشروع مثلا في العلاج بمضادات الفيروسات القهقرية فورا بعد الإصابة بجروح يتسبب فيها الغرز بالإبر (كاردو وآخرون، 1997) أو عن طريق اتباع نظام لعلاج الوليد قائم على مضادات الفيروسات القهقرية بعد الولادة (بولتريس وآخرون، 1999).
