• During the past 40 years, three basic design concepts for mining technology have been pursued: picking up nodules with a dredge-type collector and lifting them through a pipe; picking them up with a bucket-type collector and dragging the bucket up with a rope or cable; and picking up nodules with a dredge-type collector and allowing the collector to ascend by the force of its own buoyancy.
