Although distance learning has a long history going back to the use of correspondence courses in the nineteenth century, the development of technologies enabling synchronous and asynchronous communication across time and distance has vastly increased the potential of and interest in distance learning.
وبالرغم من أن للتعلم عن بُعد تاريخاً طويلاً يعود إلى الوقت الذي بدأ فيه استخدام الدورات الدراسية عن طريق المراسلة في القرن التاسع عشر، فإن تطوير التكنولوجيات التي تتيح الاتصال المتزامن وغير المتزامن من حيث اختلاف التوقيت والمسافة قد أدى إلى حدوث زيادة هائلة في إمكانات التعلم عن بُعد والاهتمام به.
