The orphan sponsorship scheme, whereby individuals donate funds for the benefit of orphans being cared for in homes or in alternative families, continues to achieve an appreciably wide success. Orphans also receive indirect assistance in kind from members of the public, although no accurate statistics are available on the amounts received in cash or in kind, since the public tends to give in confidence in accordance with Islamic traditions.

Sponsorship of orphans under Islamic Sharia is a charitable activity based on voluntary acts of religious conviction as found in Islam. In the absence of an alternative family or other guardian, the State assumes responsibility for the orphan's affairs and good citizenship.
أما كفالة اليتيم في الشريعة الإسلامية فهي من أعمال الخير وصفتها التطوع والتعبد رغبة في ثواب الله وأجره، وفي حالة عدم وجود الكفيل فالحاكم ولي من لا ولي لـه، وتتولى الدولة رعايته والاهتمام بشؤونه ليغدو مواطناً صالحاً.

The Islamic Shariah prohibits adoption, because the children of another person or an unknown person may only be the kin to their legal parents. The Shariah does however permit and moreover encourages the sponsorship of orphans, the needy, or children of unknown parents.
