• At the international level, mention should be made of the adoption by the United Nations General Assembly of the 1994 Declaration on Measures to Eliminate International Terrorism and the 1996 Supplementary Declaration.

• The Committee had also elaborated the 1994 Declaration on Measures to Eliminate International Terrorism. That Declaration, together with the supplementary Declaration of 1996, set out in a comprehensive and balanced manner the fundamental principles that should be respected by the international community in its fight against the scourge of terrorism.

• Nigeria is deeply concerned about acts of international terrorism, of which we have all been victims recently. It will be recalled that our delegation participated in the preparation of the General Assembly Declaration on Measures to Eliminate International Terrorism, in 1994, and the supplementary Declaration, years later.

• In accordance with rule 14 of the rules of procedure of the General Assembly, we have the honour to request the inclusion in the agenda of the fifty-ninth session of the General Assembly of a supplementary item entitled “Declaration by the United Nations of 8 and 9 May as days of remembrance and reconciliation”, with subsequent consideration of this item directly at a plenary meeting of the General Assembly.
