Obama officials assured me that Simpson had, indeed, had achange of heart; that he was a smart man with a sophisticatedunderstanding of the issues; that he could sway reporters and getthem to describe the commission’s advice as “bipartisan” (eventhough he could not sway actual legislators); and that he would bea genuine asset to the substantive work of the commission.
