This ratio, called an aridity index (AI), has been adopted by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in the World Atlas of Desertification to define the following classification of climatic zones:

In spite of the long previous discussion to reach a consensus on how to define desertification, the definition is complex and simplistic at the same time, equating desertification and `human-induced land degradation' in drylands, and considering only broad classifications of climatic zones - arid, semiarid and dry sub-humid.
وبرغم المناقشة الطويلة السابقة للتوصل إلى توافق في الآراء حول كيفية تعريف التصحر، فإن التعريف يتسم بالتعقيد والبساطة في ذات الوقت، إذ يسوّي بين التصحر وتردي الأراضي بسبب الإنسان في المناطق الجافة، ولا يراعي سوى التصنيفات العامة للمناطق المناخية - قاحلة وشبه قاحلة وجافة شبه رطبة.
