• In 2002 the United Nations Second World Assembly on Ageing in Madrid passed a global plan of action, the Second World Plan on Ageing as well as the International Plan of Action on Ageing 2002. It cites different aspects of demographic change and formulates political responses.

• The Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing 2002 adopted at the United Nations Second World Assembly on Ageing, states that solidarity among generations at all levels — in families, communities and nations — is fundamental for the achievement of a society for all ages.
