• Governments have encouraged the private sector, non-governmental organizations and private entities to become active providers, and have made efforts to make childcare more affordable by providing subsidies to care providers or income allowances to parents.15 Argentina, Chile, the Republic of Korea and Uruguay, for example, have moved towards more comprehensive provisioning of care services, extending services and experimenting with financing and delivery mechanisms.19

• Under Government programmes, cooperation is continuing with the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), KfW Bankengruppe, the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank for the implementation of maternal and child welfare programmes in the following areas: ensuring safe pregnancies; increasing the effectiveness of perinatal care; extending immunization services; promoting family health; encouraging and raising awareness about breastfeeding; ensuring integrated management of childhood illness; improving reproductive health; preventing iron- and iodine-deficiency disorders; and others.
