Women who suffer from violence are also at a higher risk of stress and anxiety disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder.183 A study in Michigan, United States, for example, found that 59 per cent of women who had experienced severe abuse in the previous 12 months had psychological problems, compared to 20 per cent of those who reported no abuse.184 Studies have shown that rape, childhood sexual abuse, and intimate partner violence are the most common causes of post-traumatic stress disorder in women.
