The toxic substances that make up most chemicals particularly in the developed world include: dioxins - by-products of PVC production, industrial bleaching, and incineration; brominated flame retardants - used in a wide range of products including plastics for computer casings, white goods, car interiors, carpets and carpet underlay, polyurethane foams in furniture and bedding; and phthalates used in plastic products (e.g. babies' teething rings and containers used in hospitals to deliver medications and nutrients) and in personal products such as perfumes, lotions and rubbing alcohol.
