Two recent discoveries illustrate the fundamental contribution of the microbial compartment to the understanding of life and biogeochemical cycles in the oceans: new picoplankton groups such as Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus were found to play a key role in ocean biomass turnover; and a microbial consortium responsible for the anaerobic oxidation of methane shed partial light on the degradation of methane seeping from the sediments along the continental margin and contributes to the methane cycle and the regulation of the greenhouse effect.92
وهناك اكتشافان أنجزا مؤخرا يبرزان ما يقدمه القطاع الجرثومي من مساهمة أساسية في فهم الحياة والدورات البيولوجية الجيولوجية الكيميائية في المحيطات: فقد تبيّن أن مجموعات جديدة من العوالق البيكوية، من قبيل البروكلوروكوكوس و السينيكوكوكوس، تؤدي دورا أساسيا في دورة الكتلة الأحيائية في المحيطات؛ وسلّط اتحاد جرثومي تعايشي مسؤول عن الأكسدة اللاهوائية للميثان قدرا من الضوء على عملية تحلل الميثان المتسرب من الترسبات الممتدة على طول الحافة القارية، ومساهمته في دورة الميثان وتنظيم أثر الدفيئة(92).
