In 1999 the Royal Government officially legalized medical termination of pregnancy, described as “the deliberate induction of abortion to save the woman from the risk of underlying disease and death, or when the fetus has been shown to have structural abnormalities that predispose to serious handicaps.” Health personnel thus will accept medical termination of pregnancy if two recognized medical doctors certify that the pregnancy threatens the life of the mother or that the child will suffer severe physical and mental abnormalities.
وفي عام 1999 أضفت الحكومة الملكية الشرعية رسميا على الإنهاء الطبي للحمل الذي وصفته بأنه “الإحداث العمد للإجهاض لإنقاذ المرأة من خطورة مرض أو وفاة تترتب عليه أو عندما يتضح أن الجنين يعاني أوجه شذوذ هيكلية قد توصِّل إلى إعاقات خطيرة”. وعلى ذلك يقبل العاملون الصحيون الإنهاء الطبي للحمل إذا ما شهد اثنان من الأطباء بأن الحمل يهدد صحة الأم أو أن الطفل سوف يعاني أوجه شذوذ بدنية أو عقلية قاسية.
