Those facts were shocking not only because they were preventable but also because they exposed profound health inequalities: women in developing countries bore the brunt of the burden of maternal mortality; ethnic minority women, indigenous women and women living in poverty, in both developing and developed countries, accounted for a disproportionate share of that burden; and there was no single, remotely comparable, cause of death and disability for men between the ages of 15 and 44.
وهذه الحقائق ليست صادمة فحسب لأنه لا يمكن تلافيها، بل لأنها تكشف عن عدم إنصاف عميق في المجال الصحي: فالمرأة في البلدان النامية تتحمل العبء الأكبر لوفيات الأمومة؛ ونساء الأقليات الإثنية والشعوب الأصلية والنساء اللائي يعشن في فقر، في البلدان النامية والبلدان متقدمة النمو يمثلن نسبا غير متوازنة من هذا العبء؛ ولا يوجد أي سبب وحيد قابل للمقارنة للموت أو العجز في صفوف الرجال بين سن 15 و 44 عاما.
