Important factors that require consideration in determining the most effective techniques are: how much lead time the option requires or, in other words, how much time would be available from detection of an impact threat until the collision event, commonly referred to as “warning time”; how difficult it would be to reach the threatening object (which is mostly a function of its orbital path relative to the Earth's); physical characterization of the threatening object; and how much energy resource would be required to apply an effective amount of force to the threatening object.
