In the Pacific region, a recent assessment as part of the region's response to the Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-Based Activities identified the major source categories of marine pollution as domestic waste; agricultural; industrial; and physical alterations/habitat modifications, degradation and destruction, including dredging, sand extraction and seabed mining.
