Following media reports indicating that a natural dam retaining Lake Nyos in north-western Cameroon is in danger of collapse, the Joint Unit offered an immediate evaluation of the situation so as to provide a factual baseline for further action. The resulting report concluded that the dam would probably collapse within five years, threatening some 10,000 people downstream in Cameroon and Nigeria, and would possibly be associated with the release of a cloud of carbon dioxide.
