On timescales of weeks to months, and sometimes even years, the mean abyssal velocities in most regions of the deep sea are dominated by mesoscale eddies (e.g. Speer et al., 2003), implying that there is no defined “downstream” direction, i.e. the sediment plumes generated by mining can travel in any direction.
