أما بالنسبة إلى دور المناطق البحرية المحمية في إطار مصائد الأسماك، فقد أصبح من المسلم به أن المناطق المحمية، في حال إعمالها بشكل صحيح، يمكن أن تؤدي إلى كثافة أعلى، وكتلة حيوية أكبر، وحجم وسطي أكبر للعضويات، وتنوع أكبر في الأنواع ضمن حدودها، ولو أن هذه النتيجة العامة تتأثر بعوامل مثل تركيب الأنواع، وطبيعة وشدة الأنشطة التي تُزاح بفعل القيود داخل المنطقة، وشدة الصيد خارج المنطقة المحمية.
