The monitoring of transient solar phenomena will improve scientific knowledge of the low ionosphere and of the chemical processes occurring there. On longer timescales, it will be possible to define an ionospheric index of the solar activity characteristic of the ionizing agent of the low ionosphere (extreme ultraviolet and Ly-alpha).
