Research is now under way to find ways to reduce the land-use conflicts involved in ethanol production from grain by developing techniques that exploit the cellulose route to ethanol production, in which any plant feedstock can be used, with gasification of the biomass followed by conversion of the gas into liquid fuels such as ethanol, methanol, synthetic diesel, gasoline and dimethyl ether (a potential alternative fuel for diesel engines).
وتُجرى حالياً بحوث لإيجاد سبل للتقليل من النزاعات على استخدامات الأرض في إنتاج الإيثانول من الحبوب، وذلك من خلال تطوير تقنيات لاستغلال طريقة إنتاج الإيثانول من السليولوز والتي يمكن أن تستخدم فيها أي مواد أولية نباتية، وتحويل الكتلة الحيوية إلى غاز ثم تحويل الغاز إلى وقود سائل مثل الإيثانول والميثانول والديزل الاصطناعي والبنزين والإثير ثنائي الميثيل (وهو وقود بديل محتمل للمحركات التي تعمل بالديزل).
