There followed an even more intense period of inter-clan warfare and predation that destroyed most of Somalia's remaining infrastructure and administration and exacerbated a widespread famine that claimed the lives of more than a quarter of a million Somalis and prompted some 1-2 million people to flee to other parts of Somalia or across international borders.
