• However, in a number of African countries, the small-scale production and local use of liquid biofuels, in particular the production of straight vegetable oil, pure plant oil and biodiesel from jatropha or other oil crops as a substitute for expensive imported diesel fuel, can make important contributions to income generation and sustainable development in rural areas. That has been demonstrated by successful project experiences in, among other countries, Mali, South Africa and the United Republic of Tanzania.
