If the Ivorian Government has continued to maintain close relations with the UNITA authorities, this has been to some extent at the request of the Government in Luanda, with which Côte d'Ivoire enjoys excellent diplomatic relations at the level of ambassadors. Côte d'Ivoire has long served as an intermediary to facilitate contacts between the two parties to the conflict.
