There could be no more suitable occasion to discuss these issues, since today is the eve of the one hundred twentieth anniversary of the conclusion of the Berlin Conference, that gathering of colonial Powers on Africa — without the presence of Africans — held from 15 November 1884 to 26 February 1885, which resulted in the carving up of the so-called black continent into colonial possessions that were subsequently to become independent, within borders that are straitjackets for each of the States concerned, while also constituting, in many cases, sources of discord among them.
لا يمكن أن تكون هناك فرصة أنسب لمناقشة هذه المسائل، حيث يصادف اليوم عشية الذكرى السنوية المائة والعشرين لاختتام مؤتمر برلين، ذلك التجمع الحاشد للقوى الاستعمارية في أفريقيا- الذي تم بدون وجود الأفارقة - وعُقد بين 15 تشرين الثاني/نوفمبر 1884 و 26 شباط/فبراير 1885، وأسفر عن تقسيم ما تُسمى القارة السوداء إلى ممتلكات استعمارية أصبحت مستقلة فيما، داخل حدود تشكل قيوداً على كل دولة من الدول المعنية، بينما تشكل أيضا، في حالات عديدة، مصادر للنزاع فيما بينها.

Through this celebration, Ghana tries to learn more about the slave trade, find out the roles of their ancestors in its perpetration, use it as a basis to better understand the brothers and sisters in the diaspora, and find out how to turn that tragedy into something more positive for the African continent, the black community universally and the world at large.
ومن خلال هذا الاحتفال تسعى غانا إلى تعلم المزيد عن تجارة الرقيق، ومعرفة أدوار الأسلاف في الإقدام عليها، مع استخدام ذلك كأساس لفهم أفضل أحوال الأخوة والأخوات في الشتات، ومعرفة الكيفية التي يمكن بها تحويل تلك المأساة إلى شيء أكثر إيجابية بالنسبة للقارة الأفريقية ومجتمع السود في أرجاء المعمورة، وللعالم بأسره.
