• ACSAD's field of activity is the semi-arid regions and dry lands of the Arab world, and its mission is to conduct research and studies to obtain practical scientific data that can be used to develop those lands—which account for approximately 90 per cent of the total land area of the Arab countries—to optimal advantage. ACSAD concentrates primarily on the natural resources of those lands, which promise to guarantee the food security of the Arab countries. Since its establishment, the Centre has set up the infrastructure it needs to carry out its activities: a headquarters, research stations, training centres, analysis, remote sensing and cartography laboratories, a central herbarium and a fruit tree cultivation station. In developing this infrastructure, ACSAD has applied state-of-the-art technological methods, notably remote sensing technology, geodata systems, mathematical modelling and databanks.
  وقد حُددت المناطق الجافة وشبه الجافة في الوطن العربي مجالا لعمله، كما حُدد أن مهامه تتمثل في القيام بالأبحاث والدراسات لتوفير المعطيات العلمية والتطبيقية اللازمة لتنمية وتطوير هذه المناطق التي تشكِّل نحو 90 في المائة من مساحة الوطن العربي وتتركز فيها موارده الطبيعية - وهي المناطق الواعدة لتحقيق أمنه الغذائي - وقد قام منذ إنشائه بتأسيس البنية الأساسية اللازمة لتنفيذ أنشطته من مقر رئيسي ومحطات بحثية ومراكز تدريبية ومختبرات تحليل واستشعار عن بُعد ورسم خرائط ومعشبة مركزية ومجمع وراثي للأشجار المثمرة، وطوَّر هذه البنية خلال مسيرته بما يتفق وأساليب التكنولوجيا العصرية وخاصة في مجال استخدام تقنية الاستشعار عن بُعد ونظام المعلومات الجغرافية والنماذج الرياضية وبنوك المعلومات.
