Depleted uranium is radioactive material that has harmful effects when used for military purposes, when minute radioactive particles are released into the air and enter the soil, where they will remain for millions of years.

• Chapter 3, article 3, of Legislative Decree No. 64 of 2005, which relates to the security and safety of radioactive sources, provides that anyone who acquires a radiation source must take all measures to guarantee the safety of that source and the security and protection of individuals, the environment and property against the hazards of exposure to it. Article 7 of the said Act prohibits the introduction of depleted radioactive materials into Syrian territory in any form whatsoever for the purpose of their being stored, buried or disposed of. Moreover, chapter 4, article 13, of the said Act provides that the Atomic Energy Commission shall adopt appropriate measures and procedures for detecting cases of illegal trafficking or brokering in nuclear or radioactive materials. The Environment Act imposes harsh penalties for bringing in forbidden hazardous materials or hazardous or radioactive waste.
  وكما صدر المرسوم التشريعي رقم (64) لعام 2005 المتعلق بأمن وأمان المصادر المشعة حيث نصت المادة (3) من الفصل الثالث منه على أن مَن يحوز على مصدر أشعة اتخاذ التدابير كافة لضمان أمان هذا المصدر وأمن ووقاية الأفراد والبيئة والممتلكات من مخاطر التعرض له وكما نصت المادة (7) من القانون نفسه بمنع إدخال مواد مشعة مستهلكة إلى الأراضي السورية بأي شكل من الأشكال بغرض تخزينها أو دفنها أو التصرف بها، بالإضافة إلى ذلك، نصت المادة (13) من الفصل الرابع من القانون المذكور بأن هيئة الطاقة الذرية ستتخذ التدابير والإجراءات المناسبة بغرض كشف حالات الاتجار غير المشروع والسمسرة غير المشروعة بالمواد النووية أو المواد المشعة، وقد فرض قانون البيئة عقوبات قاسية لمن يدخل مواد خطرة ممنوعة أو نفايات خطرة أو مشعة.
