• In parallel with the development of additional water sources, UNAMID will focus on the implementation of water conservation and sustainment measures, including the construction of surface run-off retaining structures (such as earth dams and water ponds), rainwater harvesting and wastewater recycling projects, in particular in areas not covered during the previous year.

• Provision is also made for non-training consultancy services in the amount of $404,100 in the areas of water and environment (waste management, sustainability of water sources, design of earth dams and hafirs and development of a database for Darfur on groundwater sources, distribution of natural resources), civil affairs (identification and collection of information in order to resolve conflicts resulting from the uneven distribution of natural resources, restructuring of the Civil Service Commission, assessment of fiscal and financial allocations, evaluation and recommendations related to compensation of claims) and rule of law (capacity assessment for the Judiciary Office of Public Prosecutions and assessment of training facilities for the Judiciary, lawyers, police and corrections officers).

• The Water and Environment Protection Unit is headed by an Environmental Engineer (P-4) who plans, coordinates and manages the activities of the Unit throughout the mission area; supervises the implementation of water source investigations and development, the drilling of water wells, implementation of surface retaining structures, such as earth dams and rain water harvesting structures, the installation, operation and maintenance of water purification and wastewater treatment plants, installation of water serving devices as water supply management strategy taking into consideration the scarcity of water in Darfur, and is responsible for treating the water to bring it to World Health Organization standards.
  ويرأس وحدة المياه وحماية البيئة مهندس بيئي (برتبة ف-4) يتولى تخطيط وتنسيق وإدارة الأنشطة التي تضطلع بها الوحدة في مختلف أنحاء منطقة البعثة؛ ويقوم بالإشراف على تنفيذ التحريات التي تجري في مجال الموارد المائية وتنميتها، وحفر آبار المياه، وإقامة هياكل للاحتجاز السطحي كالسدود الترابية وهياكل تجميع مياه الأمطار، وتركيب وتشغيل وصيانة محطات تنقية المياه ومعالجة مياه الفضلات، وتركيب أدوات لتوصيل المياه كإستراتيجية لإدارة إمدادات المياه، مع مراعاة شح المياه في دارفور، ويتولى مسؤولية معالجة المياه لتصل إلى المستويات التي حددتها منظمة الصحة العالمية.
