In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, economic actors were faced with the need to adopt laws against unfair competition, as in the case of United States antitrust legislation, in order to regulate the free competition which had led to trade abuses, fraud and disputes between colonial powers about the division of markets and the domination of colonies and dependent countries.
