• The Ley de Maternidad Gratuita aimed at enhancing women's sexual and reproductive health. The revised Ley de Amparo Laboral established a minimum quota of 20 per cent representation of women in the administration of justice.

• The Ley de Maternidad Gratuita aimed at providing women with the necessary care during pregnancy, delivery and post-partum. That law was complemented by a series of important institutional reforms.

• In addition, the Bureau had the opportunity of visiting the major public maternity hospital of Lima, Maternidad de Lima, to see first-hand how reproductive health programmes were being implemented in the city and to be briefed by the medical staff of the facility on the advances made in improving reproductive health and child survival in Peru.

• In the institutional sphere, a Fund for Safe Motherhood and Childhood (Fondo para la Maternidad e Infancia Seguras) (FONMAT) was formed, which reached 40 poor municipalities in the country, seeking to broaden the coverage of care for expectant women and children under two years of age.
