Since the explosion of information in electronic form, substantial library resources have been devoted to ensuring that the authoritative content of documents is captured, tracked and preserved.

The Steering Committee for the Modernization and Integrated Management of United Nations Libraries was formed in March 2003.

The Food Security and Agricultural Projects Analysis Service is also making use of the Dynamic Atlas suite of tools to compile national-level atlases of relevant information in the form of digital libraries that can be accessed through the Internet.

Application forms such as, birth and death certificates and wills were reworded; the procedures for the leasing of land to farmers; procedures concerning borrowing of books from public libraries; forms regarding parental authority issued by the Department of Education were also altered.

On the initiative of the Deputy Secretary-General and in the spirit of the report of the Secretary-General on strengthening of the United Nations: an agenda for further change (A/57/387 and Corr.1, paras. 73-75 and action 9), a Steering Committee on the Modernization and Integrated Management of United Nations Libraries was formed in January 2003.

The Unit is consolidated with the former League of Nations Archives Unit of the Library to form a new Registry, Records and Archives Unit at the Library; and (b) the reclassification of a P-3 post of the Chief of the newly formed Registry, Records and Archives Unit of the Library to the P-4 level to reflect the increased responsibilities of the post.

I.70 The Advisory Committee notes from paragraph A.2.47 that the reorganization of the archival function at the United Nations Office at Geneva has involved the transfer of the Registry Unit of the Division of Administration to the Library. The Unit has been consolidated with the former League of Nations Archives Unit of the Library to form the new Registry, Records and Archives Unit.

The telecottage movement began and continues as a community-driven initiative, where local civil society and NGO organizations have banded together to provide public access to ICT (telephone, fax and copy machine, computers, internet access, e-mail addresses for the citizens, a network connecting telecottages, homepage with links to databases, computers for distance work) as well as many other traditional forms of information, from library books to bulletin boards.

(b) The World Bank granted the Department a loan to: (i) increase institutional knowledge of the law, by training officials in the different subjects they need to know about for their work; (ii) develop a manual on legal procedures for investigating restrictive trade practices and unfair competition; (iii) develop infrastructure in the form of a competition library and restructured archives; (iv) establish an infrastructure for monitoring information on matters relating to anti-competitive agreements; and (v) hire consultants to provide back-up in investigations into mergers and restrictive trade practices.
