The savannahs cover a variety of soils, with scattered ferriferous or ferruginous concretions and volcanic soils.

They dominate the central crystalline or ferruginous rock plateaux, with their hilly outcrops. In the south, the low-lying coastal plains are preceded by peneplains and ferralitic plateaux.
