The self-destruct system would have to be designed so it could not function prior to the missile achieving safe separation from the firer.

If some form of self destruct system is fitted to all guided missiles, the self destruct system could possibly endanger the firer if it is able to function prior to the missile achieving the usual safe arming distance.
