At that time, any links of vassalage with Genoa disappeared.

Such action would benefit all peoples at threat from colonialism and vassalage.

The process that took the indigenous peoples' lands from them left behind very limited and debilitating alternatives for survival: vassalage (or servitude in its diverse forms), segregation in reduced areas “reserved” for them, or assimilation into the non-indigenous sector of the new socio-political entity created without indigenous input.

This feeling of disgust extends far beyond the boundaries of the groups mentioned above. In the last few days, I have been astonished to see people turning away from the USA and placing their hope, for the first time, in the development of a united Europe. And these are people who had previously felt that our only possible future lay in close solidarity with the USA – in vassalage – politically, economically, culturally, indeed in every respect.
