Starting in 2001, the list of non-governmental organizations associated with DPI has been carefully reviewed, and those that have been unable to demonstrate continuing efforts to promote the objectives of the United Nations have been disaffiliated.

Even if one religious tradition still claims a majority ofa population as its nominal adherents, individuals can still chooseto disaffiliate from the institution representing that tradition(as in the Catholic majority countries of Europe).
