It is thus apparent that birth traumas, miscarriage and congenital deformities are the principal causes of newborn deaths.

Census 2004 records an infant mortality rate of 90 per 1,000 live births, the most common causes being infections, premature birth and birth trauma, with an under-five mortality rate estimated to be 136 per 1,000 live births and child mortality to be 46 per 1,000 live births.
