Women in massive numbers have become suppliers of low-wage and flexible labour for the globalized labour markets through immigration and off-shore production, where they find themselves in work environments with little or no monitoring of labour as well as other standards.

While some of the seven drugs produced locally are protected by off-shore patents, production began before 1997 (the year in which the Brazilian patents law entered into force) so the local production does not infringe the rights of overseas patent holders.
