The cooperation with the African Union and other pertinent regional and international institutions aimed at harmonizing all efforts in conformity with the African Union's Pan-African Tsetse and Trypanosomosis Eradication Campaign should be strengthened.

In 2006, the UNTFHS provided US$ 1.712 million for the project entitled, "Establishing a Zone Free of the Tsetse and Trypanosomosis Problem in the Southern Rift Valley, Ethiopia, and Assisting Rural Communities in Agricultural and Livestock Development.

At their July 2001 summit in Lusaka, the African heads of State and Government approved a plan for the Pan-African Tsetse and Trypanosomosis Eradication Campaign through the use of SIT, which will be supported by, among others, the IAEA, the World Health Organization and the Food and Agriculture Organization.

As members are well aware, the tsetse fly and the trypanosomosis disease which it transmits are a major transboundary problem in Africa and one of the greatest constraints on the continent's socio-economic development, affecting the health of humans and livestock, limiting land use and causing increased poverty.

In the same vein, my country notes with great appreciation the Agency's support for the African Union's Pan African Tse Tse and Trypanosomosis Eradication Campaign (AU-PATTEC), its contribution to the implementation of the AU-PATTEC Plan of Action in some countries of the continent — namely, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Senegal, South Africa, Uganda and the United Republic of Tanzania — and the contributions of some member States and United Nations specialized agencies in support of these efforts.
