Interventions required for haemorrhagic fevers such as Marburg, Congo-Crimean haemorrhagic fever, and Ebola require a combination of effective and efficient epidemiological surveillance and training of health personnel in the techniques of infection control to reduce occupational risk and provide appropriate clinical care.

The year ended in June 2001 with an outbreak of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (Ebola virus), a severe disease in humans with a high mortality rate.

In the animal health subsector, reports of four cases of suspected tick-transmitted crimean-congo haemorrhagic fever, causing one human death, prompted emergency spraying of animal corrals, livestock markets and slaughterhouses.

The World Health Organization (WHO)-supported Disease Early Warning System identified and responded to serious diseases, including Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever and cholera, resulting in very low case-fatality rates.
