The volume of activities and the geographic area covered by JEG far exceeded those of the previous engineering contingents and the actual consumption of fuel used for engineering works and infrastructure repairs was significantly higher. Among the challenges highlighted by the presenter were the lack of stakeholder involvement, inadequate capacity of the JEGs to deliver, inadequate financial resources and the slow rate of implementation.

The need to include more African stakeholders in the work of the JEGs was also highlighted as was the need to respect the one-Africa principle agreed in the Joint Strategy document.

The Committee's cooperation with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) within the Joint Expert Group (JEG) on the right to education was developing: the group had met twice, and members of the Committee on Conventions and Recommendations of the UNESCO Executive Board had observed CESCR at work.
