However, a statement of concern (LC/SG 30/14, paras. 2.23-2.25) was released by the Scientific Groups regarding the large-scale nutrient fertilization of oceans using iron to sequester carbon dioxide.

While such direct sequestration would be subject to guidance and assessment procedures as described in annexes to the London Convention and the Protocol, we call attention to a possible interest to sequester carbon through iron fertilization of the open ocean.

The Contracting Parties to the London Convention and Protocol endorsed the “statement of concern” issued by the Scientific Groups to the London Convention and Protocol regarding the technology of large-scale nutrient fertilization of ocean waters using iron to sequester carbon dioxide (see LC/SG 30/14, paras. 2.23-2.25, and A/62/66/Add.1, para.

The list covers certain mineral products (marble, granite porphyry, natural magnesium carbonate), ores (iron, manganese, copper, cobalt, lead, zinc, tin, tungsten), mineral fuels (oils, pitch, petroleum oils and gas), chemical products (artificial corundum, manganese oxides), precious stones (pearl) and copper and articles.
