Norway also participates in research cooperation through the Nordic Council of Ministers, the OECD and international basic research organizations, such as the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN), the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) and the International Agency for Research and Cancer (IARC).

Moreover, the powerful force of the basic sciences provided a platform for peaceful dialogue and collaboration, as exemplified by the SESAME (Synchrotron Radiation for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East) Project, a true “science for peace” project in the Middle East.
