The minefield perimeter is mapped using a compass and a rangefinder, binoculars or special apparatus.

The increased requirements are due mainly to the acquisition of observation equipment to replace the existing handheld binoculars with binoculars with built-in compasses and laser-rangefinders to enhance the accuracy in day time and night-time observation.

The variance under this heading is attributable to the acquisition of 30 closed-circuit television cameras for surveillance of the buffer zone and 12 rangefinder monoculars, as well as the replacement of 10 night observation devices.

In mapping the minefield with the help of a rangefinder, the distances from the points being mapped to the reference points are determined and recorded on the reference diagram in a logbook.

Accordingly, I wish to inform you that the Committee established pursuant to resolution 1132 (1997) concerning Sierra Leone, received a notification on 22 November 2000, from the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, for the export of the following military equipment for use in the Ghanaian contingent serving in the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL): 1 Simrad LP7 laser rangefinder; 1 BC30 battery charger; and 5 pairs of Simrad binoculars.
