In October 2007, a new infestation of the harmful pink hibiscus mealybug was reported.

One example of biological pest control is the biological control programme of the hisbiscus mealybug initiated by the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Marine Affairs.

This programme, by using the predator-prey relationship, has successfully curtailed the rampant spread of the hisbiscus mealybug, and at the same time provided an ecologically sustainable and environmentally friendly solution to the problem of large crop losses.

Mirex was also used successfully in controlling populations of leaf cutter ants in South America, harvester termites in South Africa, western harvester ants in the United States, mealybugs in pineapples in Hawaii, and common (yellowjacket) wasps in the United States.

Once the protocols are signed, the Government of Montserrat will be able to export many local agricultural products, with the exception of guava, pineapples, citrus fruits, coconuts and the fruits from the mango plants.36 In 1996, a ban was placed on all fruits and vegetables coming from Montserrat because the island was infested with the Pink Mealybug.

Examples include fire ants in the Caribbean and the golden apple snail in the Pacific, both harmful to humans; the displacement of 60,000 sooty terns, a premier attraction on Bird Island in Seychelles, by the yellow crazy ant; and agricultural losses in Grenada valued at some $18.3 million from damage caused by the pink hibiscus mealybug.
