It has been estimated that the number of people suffering from undernourishment could increase by 16 million for each percentage point increase in the real price of staple food; the food crops currently used to produce ethanol are also the crops that form the largest part of the diets of poor people, maize, sugar cane, soy, cassava, palm oil and sorghum provide around 30 per cent of mean calorie consumption of people living in chronic hunger.
ويُقدّر أن عدد الذين يعانون نقص التغذية سيزداد بمقدار 16 مليون شخص لكل زيادة بنسبة 1 في المائة في السعر الحقيقي للمواد الغذائية الأساسية. فالمحاصيل الغذائية التي تُستخدم حالياً في إنتاج الإيثانول هي ذاتها المحاصيل التي تشكل الجزء الأكبر من قوت الفقراء.
